Support and Criticism of Spiral of Silence Theory Some - TopicsExpress

Support and Criticism of Spiral of Silence Theory Some researchers reference key concepts of Noelle-Neumann in other areas of mass media study. They recognize the value of mass media’s potential influence upon a majority’s mindset. But the Spiral of Silence does have its critics. Logical consistency issues lead to flaws in the application Noelle-Neumann’s propositions. Lack of sufficient and concrete empirical evidence leaves the critic to claim too much emphasis is placed on media influence. Socio-economic class, self-esteem, ego centrism, indifference to issues, all become valid reasons for absence of dialog. My Analysis There is no doubt that media shapes our lives, but the process is dynamic and continues to grow more complicated with time. All communication theories are inherent with merits and weaknesses. It’s the nature of the beast. What I actually know about the Spiral of Silence Theory is limited to my personal experiences. I am not afraid to discuss topics with rational human beings, it is the crazy ones I have no tolerance for. Most seem to have a deficit of originality, so they rely upon the thoughts of others; heroes, leaders, idols, and even news commentators. I recently retired from a large corporation. During my tenure, I was elected for 5 consecutive terms as a union official. One of our contracts was concessionary, the trade-off was greater representation at the management level. As a union representative assigned as a counter-part to a department head, I had the privilege to attend management staff meetings. It boggles my mind; how a small group of incompetents and sycophants can maintain such power over the working class. The typical staff meeting is a huge waste of time, the first half is full of ass-kissing and jockeying for favors of the director. The second half is, who are we going to screw over to come in under budget? No one (except for me) dares to voice opposition to the big guy’s ideas. My adversarial stance at these fiascoes gave me friendship to a number of managerial underlings, I could channel suggestions without risk of demotion. Being ‘hardcore’ has its perks, eh. How does media fit into all this? In today’s corporate environment there is a thing called “consultants” and they “facilitate” stuff. It’s a growth industry, all you have to do is come up with some “buzz-words” and be good at talking around in circles. And, if your bullshit sticks, there’s a pretty big slice of the pie! Which is better than giving it to the people who actually produce something I suppose?
