Surviving BHC Cecil Hewitt (recorded my myself November of 2012)his remarks on bring a BHC in Canada. He came in 1938/39 - one of the last years this program ran. His experience was no different then those who came in 1900. He likes his life here in Canada. Hes had a good life. If he would have stayed in England, he would have adjusted there too and would have said he was happy to have been kept in England. Does the end justify the means???? -he was coerced into signing an indentured agreement - he had NO understanding of what he was signing a 14 year old kid, what do they know about the law -you were asked to sign and you did what you were told -you were called gutter rats, thieves, street rats - he considered himself as owned by the farmer -he has clearly resigned himself to the thought that this was simply the way it was. -strict and hard work both summer and winter -often left alone to work while the farmers children went to school -he was not sent to school -if he didnt do his work right he hear about it from both sides of the stick -was paid 23 cents a day for his work -Barnardos held the money until 21 -He doesnt remember receiving his pay (you would think that after these conditions, he would remember getting a lump sum of money for his pay at 21. -Learn to work to serve - learn and serve. That is why he was here. -didnt tell his children until the past few years. Thought it was about time that they knew why he was the way he was as a parent. -feels good to finally tell this story -you LEARN to enjoy life with what you had around you -there WERE opportunities in the homes in England, learning to bake breads for example.
