Syria: How long can U.S. continue to destabilise one country after another? The stories of Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya or Somalia are all similar. They were all relatively stable until U.S. got involved in the local and regional politics. Experts agree Afghanistan is a failed state with its people living in fear of their lives daily. Since the U.S. and NATO intervention in Libya led to the killing of Gaddafi, Libya has become a country ruled by armed militia groups and Al Qaeda backed terrorist groups. We witnessed the impact of that when U.S. Ambassador was killed in Benghazi by terrorist groups. Similarly the U.S. intervention in Iraq has resulted in the division of the country into three regions controlled by Kurds, Shias and Sunnis. Iraq is experiencing a major sectarian warfare in which 10s are killed everyday by means of car bomb. As U.S. prepares to attack Syria it is important for the world to recognise the destabilisation impact of U.S. Foreign Policy which has increasingly become militarised and securitised. It is likely that any U.S. military strike against Syria will produce a situation similar to that of Libya, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Christians have become major victims of U.S. destabilisation efforts. In 2003 there were 2 million Christians in Iraq. Now only about 400,000 live there. The rest have either been killed, or have been forced to flee to other countries. In Syria, minority groups such as Christians, Alawites and Druze will come under serious attack if Sunnis and their Al Qaeda friends get the upper hand as a result of U.S. intervention. In fact a sectarian warfare similar to the ones in Iraq and Lebanon could be witnessed in Syria. It is important for the U.S. to critically assess the impact of its foreign policy.
