#TBT ... Elvira and I, we have some history. I first became a published journalist at 15 years old, thanks to a magazine called Femme Fatales, which hired me to profile women of the science-fiction and horror film genre. From Carrie Fisher to Linda Blair, I had their home phone numbers in my little black book and was racking up quite a phone bill as a cub reporter interviewing them daily from across the country for my column, Fatale Attractions. Now, the magazine did not actually know I was only 15 at the time. They didnt ask, so I never told them. All our business was handled by phone, as I was in Florida and they were based out of Baltimore. I had originally submitted an article about horror film icon Brinke Stevens and followed up with relentless phone calls. I eventually contacted the editor Bill George, and while he didnt publish the story, he believed it was good enough to take a chance on me. My first by-line arrived in an October 1995 issue with Elvira on the cover, and three years later I landed my first cover story interviewing her as well. I was 18 then and living in California so I was able to conduct the interview in person. Elvira was married at the time to her manager, Mark Pierson, who had a very controlling hand when it came to Elvira as a product. He exercised first rights to remove or edit anything from the article, extracting anything that might have been deemed too personal or not in alignment with the image of Elvira. The unfortunate thing is, I wasnt interviewing Elvira. I was interviewing Cassandra Peterson, the actress who plays her, and therefore was hoping for a piece with a much more personal feel. But while many of the best moments of this interview became fodder for the cutting room floor, I will never forget sitting across from her, lost in her crystal blue eyes when I gathered the courage to ask, What turns you on? You mean, what am I attracted to? she mused. To be completely honest with you..., she said, leaning in whispering, I always find myself attracted to cute, young gay boys. I turned more red than any shade of blush shed ever donned. Naturally, Mark didnt take kindly to this and it was removed along with many other anecdotes. They divorced a year later. So, the Mistress of the Dark... the gal who put the boob back into the boob tube... that gal in black that keeps comin back... El-V Double-D... yeah, shell always hold a special place in my heart
