TEACH ME FLORISTRY ‘Flower arranging and floristry for the terrified!’ TIPS & TRICKS TO HELP YOU There will always be something about the arrangement, bouquet or corsage you are making that you is think is not quite right. Its just human nature! So here are a few ideas for you to ask yourself what could it be. The main piece of help I can give you is to get a self standing mirror, like a dressing table mirror. It wants to be about 18 inches or 50cm square. As you make your arrangement, bouquet or buttonhole, turn it so it reflects in the mirror – we are naturally critical of other peoples work so now you are viewing it through the reflection it looks like someone else has made it. You can now see where it needs either, more flowers to one side, or more colour to one side, maybe the bouquet needs to be longer - in the Brides Tides I have a large mirror to my right I keep checking the bouquets in to ensure the right shape. CHECK LIST IF ALL ELSE FAILS! HAVE YOU CHECKED? …the colours are all spread even & larger heads towards the centre and the smaller buds towards the out side? …You need 3 types of shapes – Spray carnations are Transitional’ - Carnations are Mass - pointed flowers like Veronica, Gladioli, Larkspur are Spike’ you need these 3 types of ‘shape’ flowers and 3 different foliage/leaves to make the best mix …The shape is right? If it is a posy, is it round? Is it supposed to be an oval? If it is a front facing arrangement (triangle shape), is it the same width from the middle each side? Is it leaning forward or backwards? – a common tendency. …Check in a mirror? – to double check the shape and size? – Is it too tall – not tall enough? Measure the width or height of the container or dish you are using to work out height and width to see if it is right. Usually twice the height of the dish and half the width of the height or you can have the same height to width. …The foliage/leaves – is there enough visual weight at the base – is it too ‘heavy’ looking at the top of the design (have you got too many leaves around the top)– bigger leaves generally to the bottom while thinner leaves at the top. …Solidaster, Gypsophila or Statice or other ‘filler’ flowers etc. are they mixed evenly? Have you put too many flowers in…Is there a space for that ‘bumble bee’ to walk around the flowers! It all seems a lot to take in, but if you take a little bit of information on board each time you make a design, even a small one; your brain will remember automatically what to do, and we are training our thoughts to make these decisions automatically. So don’t be despondent, there are always 3 points about your arrangement that is good. Either you have chosen a good colour mix of flowers, the height is good, you like the shape, etc. Use that mirror and go through the check list above! Drink that coffee and ask a friend round!
