THE ARK OF THE COVENANT: A TYPOLOGY OF JESUS CHRIST The Ark of the Covenant, also known as the Ark of the Testimony, is a chest described in the Book of Exodus as containing the Tablets of Stone on which the Ten Commandments were inscribed. When we realize that the Old Testament was a type and shadow of things to come, it becomes an amazing typology of Jesus Christ, Emmanuel, God with us. Exodus 25: 21, 22 And thou shalt put the mercy seat above upon the ark; and in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give thee. 22 And there I WILL MEET WITH THEE, and I WILL COMMUNE WITH THEEE from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel. God was in Ark of the Covenant, which contained His laws written in stone – but this was just a shadow of what was to come. The bible tells us that God was in Christ – reconciling the world back to himself. He met with us and He communed with us. He touched us, and we touched Him. He beheld us, and we beheld Him. However, unlike the ark, which was temporary and limited to a specific time, God has chosen to permanently reside in Jesus Christ. Jesus became God’s “headquarters”, so to speak. The fullness of His Devine nature (Godhead) dwelled in Him, and we are complete in Jesus, who is the head of all principality and power. Since the ascension, only Jesus has spoken audibly from Heaven. It is Jesus who is returning for His church, Jesus who will reign in the millennium, and forevermore. Jeremiah 31: 33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. The Old Testament was the New Testament concealed; and the New Testament was the Old Testament revealed. This knowledge gives new meaning to the following scriptures, for God not only dwelt in Spirit among the Israelites, but He also dwelt among His people in the person of Jesus Christ, and continues to dwell with us today by the presence of His Holy Spirit. God has taken the laws which were written in stone and placed them in our hearts when He baptized us with His Spirit. Leviticus 26: 12, 13 And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people. 13 I am the LORD your God, which brought you forth out of the land of Egypt, that ye should not be their bondmen; and I have broken the bands of your yoke, and made you go upright. Exodus 29: 42 - 46 42 “For the generations to come this burnt offering is to be made regularly at the entrance to the tent of meeting, before the LORD. There I WILL MEET YOU AND SPEAK TO YOU; 43 there also I will meet with the Israelites, and the place will be consecrated by my glory. 44 “So I will consecrate the tent of meeting and the altar and will consecrate Aaron and his sons to serve me as priests. Then I WILL DWELL AMONG THE ISRAELITES AND BE THEIR GOD. 46 They will know that I am the LORD their God, who brought them out of Egypt so that I might dwell among them. I am the LORD their God. Colossians 2: 17 NIV These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is found in Christ. John 1: 10 – 14 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. 11 HE CAME UNTO HIS OWN, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. 14 And the WORD WAS MADE FLESH, and DWELT AMONG US, (and WE BEHELD HIS GLORY, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth. 2 Corinthians 6: 16 What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols? For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people. 2 Corinthians 3: 14 – 18 But their minds were blinded: for until this day remaineth the same vail untaken away in the reading of the old testament; which vail is done away in Christ. 15 But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart. 16 Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away. 17 Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. 18 But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord. @Back on Track Bible Studies – Rick Flores 2015
