THE DEAD MAN ROARS tells a story of a rich man’s son whom a witch instructs to fulfill a condition involving human sacrifice in order to be initiated into a cult bestowing the power to summon lightning to strike those who threaten the interests of the holder of such power in one way or another. This power boomerangs. The bereaved family imposes a potent ritual curse whose consequences are far reaching and utterly tragic. In the end, peace has to be sought and this involves consulting the spirit of the dead. THE DEAD MAN ROARS by GERALD MALINGA Book Review; The story begins by revealing the grief a family has faced after being tormented by the zombie like appearance of one Johnny Haraka who Dibola the main character murdered so as to fulfill a sacrifice in order to be initiated into a cult bestowing the power to summon lightning. This grief is equally translated to their uncle Pembo who gets revelations from his late brother through dreams to go and make peace with the bereaved family. Events are unfolded that lead to the ritual curse. This whole incident is triggered by the looming cattle raids that the late Chief Ikoja and his family were working hard to avert tooth and nail. The only solution was to consult the powerful witch of Toibong so he could sell to them the magic powers that could summon lightning to strike the cattle raiders incase they came to raid their cattle. Bombay a total witch who was purported to have been using dead bodies to work in his plantation and sometimes unconscious human beings at night gave Dibola the instruction to summon lightning after fulfilling the sacrifice. The death of an only son to Matilda caused a lot of grief. To make matters worse, he had been admitted to Ivory Tower University. This unbearable situation led Matilda to equally impose a potent ritual curse whose consequences were utterly tragic and catastrophic so as to revenge against the sons killers. Toibong this time is plunged into chaos after soldiers who had come to keep peace are suddenly taken and later that day the cattle raiders end up having easy access to Toibong. Dibola and his team fail to execute their magical attack and they are lined for execution by the warriors. By coincidence, Bombay is brought and equally lined for execution. That moment depicted that Bombay’s magic was useless because he himself ended up being killed with his women. Dibola was set free after seeing the strange transformation of the witch and his wives. A big shock to chief Ikoja who kept withdrawn from the public after losing over three hundred fifty heads of cattle. Chief Ikoja eventually dies. Dibola due to family negligence forgets his responsibility, goes drinking then comes back home, vomits his pieces of pork marinated with hard liquor and the hungry children end up eating them. Abena the mother to his children gets disappointed and commits suicide. A society full of barbaric acts is depicted when Dibola is made to marry a corpse with thirty pigs. The two children are killed by a zombie instantly at the same night setting all of them on the run for nine years. T his time they are back from a self imposed exile and they are on a round table discussing with their uncle how to go and seek for forgiveness and possibly end the torment. The bereaved mother declines to forgive them due to a reason that she would first have to consult the one they killed. A very rare magic is unleashed on the day of calling the dead one from the grave setting the killers to flight, hence they fail again to make peace. One person who tries to escape from the ordeal by going far away hunting and possibly establish himself from somewhere coincidentally meets with the word of God and comes back with hope that Jesus the son of God would put right the problems in their home.
