THE FIELD OF POWER “The Field of Power”, a new play by Travis Weekes, employs the myth of the La Diablesse to explore the relationship between crass capitalism, political dog fight and social degradation in modern society. The play chronicles the journey of Eva and her boyfriend Mawon, a young couple from the fictitious village of Derriere Morne. Eva longs to get out of the poverty of Derriere Morne where the Soucouyant sucks the life out of the villagers. Mawon on the other hand is contented to remain settled because of his love for Eva and their dream of raising a family. Eva, though now desires to flee from the growing poverty and social degradation of the village and makes a decision to journey to the land beyond, where there is promise of a better life. To get out of the village however, Eva must climb over the mountain of Derriere Morne, pass near the home of the La Diablesse, partner of the Soucouyant who holds the key to the Secret Gate. The La Diablesse is known to have seduced many a man who ventures into her yard where they eventually disappear without a trace. Mawon attempts to discourage Eva from confronting the La Diablesse but Eva challenges him to fight the Soucouyant in the village while she journeys up the mountain. Up on the mountain the La Diablesse refuses to relinquish the key to the Secret Gate unless Eva joins her evening Snake Dance and agrees to a cosmetic makeover of her person. Madame Sajès an old catholic gardeur; half sister of the La Diablesse guides Eva through prayer to find her strength in the Field of Power. Down in the village, the Soucouyant uses the capitalists and the politicians to lure and mesmerize Mawon. Thus Eva and Mawon become drawn into fierce battle for their bodies and souls. How they organize to defeat the La Diablesse and the Soucouyant becomes a cultural and spiritual war that brings the action of the play to a most exciting climax! “The Field of Power” premieres on Wednesday January 21 at 7pm on the grounds of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College. It will be the main feature of the institution’s “A Night of the Arts,” organized to celebrate Nobel Laureate Week.
