THE FORT WOOD INFLUENCE Mauritzfontein Stud’s former champion - TopicsExpress

THE FORT WOOD INFLUENCE Mauritzfontein Stud’s former champion sire Fort Wood is one of the most influential stallions to have stood in South Africa in the past two decades. Not only is Fort Wood a champion sire in his own right, he is also a champion broodmare sire, and a very successful sire of sires. Major races won by offspring of the Sadler’s Wells horse include the Vodacom Durban July (twice), SA Derby (twice), Horse Chestnut Stakes, Cape Derby (twice), Paddock Stakes, SA Classic (three times), J&B Met and Cape Guineas. To date, Fort Wood has sired 76 stakes winners – of which 15 are top flight winners. During the 2013-2014 racing season, Fort Wood was represented by 4 individual stakes winners, a tally which includes the top-class fillies Athina, Close The Gap, Ilha Bela and Magic Smoke. No fewer than three sons of Fort Wood have been named South African Horse Of The Year – Horse Chestnut, Celtic Grove and Dynasty. The latter is now an outstanding stallion, with his offspring including Irish Flame and Legislate, both of whom were named Horse Of The Year. Other champions sired by Fort Wood include Dog Wood, Elusive Fort, Saddlewood, and Thundering Star. This great stallion and his sons are responsible for seven lots on sale at the 2014 Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale, and are bound to include some truly cracking athletes amongst them. Fort Wood himself has two lots on offer: Lot 24 is a brother to three winners. His dam is a winning half sister to top class race mare and producer Gay Regina, and this colt is a three parts brother to the Fort Wood sired champion Celtic Grove. Lot 101 is a full brother to two winners. He is out of the very talented Sovereign Beat, a stakes winner of six. This colt’s first two dams both were feature race winners, with his granddam having won the Gr2 Merchants Stakes. Fort Wood’s champion son, and promising young sire, Elusive Fort is well represented on the sale with three attractive lots on sale: Lot 20 is a filly whose Jallad sired dam is a sister to three stakes winners. This well bred filly hails from the family of champion My Swallow. Lot 94 is a filly whose dam is a half sister to the stakes winners Weston Paint and Winona. This is also the family of the top class fillies Clear Creek and Hawaiian Wahoo. Lot 113 is a superbly bred filly, whose dam is a stakes placed daughter of champion sire Western Winter. This filly is from the same family as international champions Majestic Prince, Secreto, Real Quiet and Crowned Prince. Fort Wood’s greatest son, Horse Chestnut, is also represented at the RTR Sale. He has 2 lots on offer: Lot 82 is a half sister to 2 winners, including stakes winner Golden Dawn. From the great Party Time family, this filly is related to such outstanding females as In The Fast Lane, Lambarina, and Sally Bowles. Lot 88 is a filly out of a three time winning Saumarez mare, and is thus bred on the same cross which produced Epsom Derby winner Authorized. This filly is also very closely related to Horse Chestnut’s top class son, Chestnut’s Rocket. The 2014 Emperors Palace Ready To Run Sale is a great place to acquire descendants of a truly legendary local stallion!
