THE ILLUSIVE TRUTH Dearest Muki, A time has come when I must admit I don’t know the truth – but then, neither does Obama, the most powerful man on Earth! If you ask me, truth is as clear, or as illusive, as the tongue that spells it out! Now, considering everyone these days has a forked tongue, getting to the bottom of anything has become well nigh impossible! As a consequence I am petitioning the International Court of Justice to direct judiciary all over the world to immediately cease the practice of putting criminals under oath and demanding they tell ‘the truth and nothing but the truth! Once my petition is accepted then I am sure, in addition to diehard criminals and the legal fraternity - who lie as per the call of their professions – all world leaders will also breathe a sigh of relief! They can then spin any yarn and nobody would hold them accountable! Thereafter they would not need to know whether it is Al Queda, home grown extremists, political deviants or foreign agents who are destabilizing Pakistan – or if the drone attacks are good or bad; or whether our nuclear arsenal is in danger of getting into the wrong hands! or why there is no electricity or gas or water in the Country; or why the prices of all commodities are soaring sky high! Likewise, there is no point in asking why corruption is so rampant or why there is such high unemployment! Perchance you do ask, then, expect them to tell you a whale of a tale and leave it at that! After all, their primarily task is to make a buck and oblige their coterie of friends regardless of who is ‘droned’ out of existence; or if the industry comes to a standstill or remittances dry up! They know that people who ask such questions are paid to do so by political enemies’ and that the masses are really and truly happy with their Government! Now liars have a way of deluding themselves! Though it is not much, but the real downside is that the Country suffers, the masses wallow in ignorance and the enemies ridicule us at every turn! We can’t be counted among nations who can hold their head up high; nor can we do any justice to our future generations; or to the tenants of the religion we practice and preach. This perturbs my friend Suchbol and, as a consequence, he is proposing a radically new solution. He wants all future leaders to address us, fully fitted with lie detector machines that automatically deliver ten lashes for each lie fed to the nation! Suchbol is absolutely sure this measure, if implemented in letter and spirit should be a sufficient deterrent. What he is forgetting is that our leaders are devious enough to find a way around it! as a consequence.......the most devious liars will continue to get the Nobel Peace Prize...........while i will have to be content with a 1000 wives and a royal residency in Washington. And now it is time for my tennis match with Razzaki!
