THE INTERACTIVE STORY VS. GAME After videos like these: https://youtube/watch?v=dgu76ql6FSo&list=UUm4JnxTxtvItQecKUc4zRhQ I really want to show people videos like these: https://youtube/watch?v=812rZ_JBzlI video games is not the real reason why board games have a new renaissance, the real reason is that video games have been dumb down thanks to the call of duty style action games that dont require you to think, strategize or imagine but point and shoot and the US gov is happy with that To remind people that gaming and gamers are older than the late 60s: listverse/2013/01/20/10-most-important-board-games-in-history/ To remind people that Games are not Walking Simulators involving quests to obtain deepness in feeling. https://youtube/watch?v=nWNW6PuYqd8 While video games can have story, while winning and losing can be felt emotionally, while interactivity can be fascinating, a game is a set of rules in which the participant must overcome great challenge in order to reach a winning condition. It is that challenge alone that defines gaming in a nutshell; you are here to be challenged. Its not about high scores and achievements alone, its the very emotion of overcoming challenge itself which you cant find in games like Gone Home or Dear Esther. merriam-webster/dictionary/game If all you care about is communicating through a deep story that involves interaction, dont bog yourself down by trying to make a game or fulfill some sort of requirement so that it can be called a game. Just because there is a controller involved doesnt mean you have to be a video game. Youre not doing anything innovative or revolutionary, youre making something thats pretending to be something else. Im tired of this misconception because I want Interactive Storytelling to reach its true potential as an entirely new medium and I most certainly do not want gaming to be even further confused than it already has. With the decrease in difficulty in many games today, theyve all lost their appeal in favor of interactive movies. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- On a side note, Im happy to see with channels like The Gaming Historian covering the history of video games, but I think the history of games in general throughout the centuries feels fairly underrated in the community. Youd be surprised as a game developer, how much you can learn from board games even if youre making an action adventure game! E.G. Warhammer: Space Marine is a good example of a third person action adventure that uses some of the miniature board game rules with its AI; the Orcs. The most notable one is the biggi-smalls groups; if the leader is taken down, the smaller forces are less organized and retreat with the decrease in moral.
