THE LAST KLEZMER (The story of Leopold Kozłowski-Kleinman): Leopold Kozłowski-Kleinman, often called as the last Galician klezmer, is a pianist, composer and conductor. He was born into a family with a long musical traditions in Przemyślany, 1918. His father Herman Kleinman headed a klezmer orchestra, and the grandfather of Leopold, Pejsach Brandwein, started an orchestra that became famous in all of Austro-Hungary. During the war, Leopold fought as a partisan, after which he joined the Polish People’s Army (LWP). He arrived in Kraków in 1945, where he graduated from conducting studies at the State Higher School of Music. He founded the Song and Dance Ensemble, which he headed for the next twenty-three years. He also cooperated with the Jewish Theatre in Warsaw. Leopold composed music to a few films, including Jerzy Kawalerowicz’s “Austeria”. He was also a music consultant during the making of “Schindler’s List”, where he played a minor role as well.
