THE POST BAG: NRC registration Editor, It is so surprising and worrying that with just over two weeks before the country holds presidential elections, we lack necessary materials for issuance of National Registration Cards. After visiting Kitwe’s local court offices, which is the main centre for issuance of National Registration Cards, I was gripped with anxiety and fear when some officers made it clear that the issuance of NRCs had been suspended with immediate effect due to the non-availability of registers and other essential facilities. One cannot vote without an NRC. However, someone may lose an NRC but they have a voter’s card. It is for this reason that centres issuing NRCs should be effective in their work so that they don’t put voters at risk of missing out on voting in the forthcoming election. Moreover, the other concern is the period given to replace voters cards, which is so short, and the manner in which the same exercise is conducted for people who have shifted to other places. It is so retrogressive and expensive to travel all the way from Chavuma to Lusaka just to replace a voter’s card in order to ensure that the right to vote and participate in national matters is respected. It is in this regard that I write this article to urge the government to make drastic changes and act in time to safeguard the interests of would-be voters in future elections. Michael S. Sikazwe
