THIS DAY IN HISTORY - January 3, 1943: It was 71 years ago that the most celebrated, the most famous, the most decorated African classical music connoisseur and Nigerian organist-composer, Fela Sowande, distinguished himself as the First African to earn the prestigious Fellowship of the Royal College of Organists—FRCO diploma, in London; the highest British certificate in organ performance. In addition to his extraordinary performance on the King of all Western instruments, Sowande was awarded three outstanding prizes for his brilliance in the academic aspects of the examination: [1] The Harding Prize—highest marks for the paper work examination; [2] the Limpus Prize—highest marks for Tests at the organ; and [3] the Dr. F. J. Read Prize—highest aggregate marks for the whole examination, having passed organ performance and paper work in the same session. The entire black community is extremely proud and celebrates this milestone accomplishment all over the globe. bookstore.iuniverse/Products/SKU-000062011/The-Organ-Works-of-Fela-Sowande-Cultural-Perspectives.aspx
