THIS IS a kinda long story of typical musician douch baggery... I was in LA last year hangin w my buddy for a few days and he suggested we go to a well known club on their open jam night. I am NOT into these open jams at clubs, not my bag even when I was 20 something . My buddy persists , so I go ,only for him. It was embarrassing to say the least , the other musicians sitting in were young and very green so ofcourse I was lumped in with them as inexperienced and not really good. I could see the attitude already from the guys hosting the jam. Granted the house band that night was really good , but the comments i just happened to overhear as I walked in were enough to turn me off, two of the band members discussing experiences w east coast musicians as if theyre all typical guidos or vinnies .that made me wanna say (in my best Pesci voice) ehh beach boy, do I amuse you? Anyhow, I go to finally sit in and I assume Im playing the bass players rig and he says to me what ,u dont have your own bass? I reply well , yeah but not here w me he then very loudly says infront of the entire room ( which is the size of my NYC apartment btw) you can use my bass, but those strings are 12 yrs old and you better not break them or Ill kill you! and he also followed that with a can you even play? At that point I really shouldve NOT been there , but I knew my pal wanted to hear me jam @ this famous club. So, I bit my lip and refrained from replying w something like well mr joe Cali bass douche, maybe I can box better than I play bass, how bout we find out right now instead I replied yeah I think I can play, at least my Mother said I could the small crowd laughed . After this, we played some generic jam tune and the other young musicians sitting in were pretty terrible and one of them kept screwing up the songs very simple form, however, nice guy that I am, I went with him and then ofcourse douche house band sax guy gives me the evil eye like I really sucked . Needless to say ,it was a stupid experience and I will NEVER do this again, no matter how much my pal begs me next time lol! But after the sit in, we were getting in his car and I just had to go back in the club and confront the bass player one last time. I walked up to this dude ( who looked like he just walked off the set of sons of anarchy ) and said hey thanks for the warm welcome dude and hes so stupid he doesnt get the sarcasm .he replies oh yeah, sorry dude, you sounded good dude, you can come back and sit in again if u want dude golly gee really? mr living in the valley guy?!!!!really? LMAO! I guess the moral of the story is, if youre in a house band hosting a jam , dont do it if youre not prepared for terrible players sitting in and everything else that comes w the territory. Also, you never know whos gonna walk in , you really dont , at least dont start off being a douche to a musician you dont know, thats just bad manners . Anyhow, I realize this bad behavior could happen anywhere , but F* CK that place ...lol... and LA jive!
