(THIS POST WAS WRITTEN BY OUR FRIEND SCOTT ABRAMS.) What can we learn from the insect??? When I was burning my equinox fire(thanks Basil George for the inspiration) I placed a rather large log with a hole in the center of it around the fire to form my ring and lit it up. As the fire got bigger it obviously got hotter and I started to notice a small number of ants began to move from the the small holes inside the grains of the wood and as time went on the number of ants increased. Minute by minute that number continued to grow until it was almost like a river of ants flowing from the inside of the log. The night grew darker so it became hard to see the ants movement without some extra light so I went and got a very bright flashlight to use just to check on them. When I returned I shined the light on the ants and I could see that they each were carrying something in they jaws...it was their babies!!! Ants by the thousands were carrying eggs sometimes three at a time out of that hot log and into the grass I imagine to some safe place. The ants would return and gather more take them to safety and return once more, it was amazing. My children asked why they were doing that and they each were astonished that the ants were willing to to sacrifice their own lives for those babies, even if those eggs werent their own. I explained that the ant worked as a colony and werent concerned with themselves as the individual, I explained that the ants sole purpose of being here was to ensure the survival of the colony.....as a whole and if that meant they would meet their own demise to do that then they would. For hours upon hours those ants would return to work in temperatures that were easily reaching 200 degrees just to gather the eggs. I woke the next morning to find that my equinox fire had died down to a smolder and the log was still partially intact. The ants were all gone, all but the ones that continued to attempt to get the last of the eggs and died in the extreme heat...... What can we learn from the insects???? As simple as the little ant is he understands that the colony works best as a whole, that abandoning even one places an Impact on the well-being of the whole. They can teach us responsibility, unity, community, family, bravery, commitment, and dedication....all of the things that the world of disorder need most!!! We should all look to our animal family for teachings and that includes the smallest of those members.
