This from Metservices Thunderstorm Outlook Valid to: Midnight Monday 19 Jan 2015, Issued at: 8:38am Monday 19 Jan 2015 An unstable northwest flow over the South Island is expected to turn southerly in the south late afternoon and evening, while upper level temperatures continue to become colder. About eastern Otago, there is now a high risk of thunderstorms this afternoon and evening, while the risk in coastal Southland during this period is pegged at moderate. In all the above areas, thunderstorms will have the potential to bring heavy rain of 10-20mm/hr and hail. However about eastern Otago there is now a moderate risk of SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS producing large hail, 20mm or more in diameter. For inland areas of Southland & Otago there is a continued low risk of thunderstorms during the period.
