TIL that only around 35% of Americans have passports. The figure is an all-time high. reddit/r/todayilearned/comments/2b13l2/til_that_only_around_35_of_americans_have/ • Doesnt the whole world exist within the United States? • Most of it. The stuff that isnt revolves around us anyway... • Most people in the US dont really have much of a reason to get one, so its not all that surprising? • Travelling? is this not a common thing in your country? this bemuses me as i live in Australia and want nothing more than to travel! • Well we want to travel. But were poor. Also, you dont need a passport to go to Canada or Mexico. I know in Michigan you pay an extra 5 dollars and you get an enhanced drivers license and that is like a pass port. • You need a passport to cross the border. Can confirm, crossed border. Needed passport • Its plenty common but: You dont really need a passport to go to canada/mexico and plenty of other places. If you are in the military stationed abroad you wont need a passport to be in that country. For example, I was stationed in Germany and got to visit Italy/France/UK/Poland/czech/ireland/etc without needing a passport. I also deployed to kuwait/iraq so those are a few more that didnt need a passport for. The US is a massive country so its not like you have to go overseas to experience everything from deserts to mountains to just about anything else you would like to see. Many people have zero desire to travel very much. My mom and dad only want to go to mexico (to visit family) or certain parts of the states. They arent huge fans of long flights or drives so a 20 hour flight to china or something would be absolute torture, not to mention the fact that they are set in their ways and would have a pretty big culture shock on many levels. Traveling is expensive so its not like everyone can travel per se etc. • Wait, you got into the UK and Ireland without a passport? How? • He just said it was because he was in the military... • Did u visit Ireland or Stop over in Shannon? • US citizens have needed to use a passport to get into Canada and Mexico for over 10 years now. • There is quite a bit of traveling that you can do without leaving the US. • that was part of my point • You sounded like youre saying that since most people dont have a reason to get a passport that they dont travel. • my bad then i spose • We love to travel. Our country is also incredibly huge, and theres a lot to see without leaving our borders. ⸝₍̗⁽ˆ⁰ˆ⁾₎͕⸍∘˚˳°✧ Increase likelihood of this page showing up and like this post • OKcupid Visitors every day (30-200+ per day) OKvisits It is free
