TPM Page Reader vents...... Mitch Shadbolt At puppy class tonight we had different trainer, usual one away. She started the class by stating you should only ever use a flat collar, if you use anything else then you arent training your dog correctly. She had her pup there same age as mine, but said it was only second time on lead which is why it wasnt doing what she asked. She then used my pup who had slip collar on for all her demonstrations. Well up until I walked out. A lady came for first time with her Mastiff 4-5 months old pup. She said she had behavioural problems with the dog, that it didnt listen to her and was bad around the kids. When asked what she meant by bad, she stated. Dog grabs her three year old pulls him to the ground, then pins him to the ground with its mouth around his neck this so called trainer, told her to put the dog in time out & only let her back in with the kids when she calms down. I couldnt believe it, Im seriously scared for both her children & the dog. I ended up leaving when others where asking what to do when dog not doing as they ask & she told them to use excitement or food to get their attention & then get them to sit and reward them. At this point I excused myself & left. I am sure this is happening everywhere, I am so frustrated I cant sleep. So yes venting to you. Thanks for listening. Paw Man This is a prime example of why I am so concerned about positive-only training. In the above situation there are two likely outcomes...... 1. The behavior will continue to escalate and the child will be bitten, ending in the dog being euthanased, or 2. They will get in a specialist positive-only trainer who will try distraction, interruption and redirection and then when the behavior continues to escalate they will say that the dogs brain is wired incorrectly and that it should be euthanased. For a training style that is called Positive-only the outcomes dont appear to be all that positive? Mitch, thanks for going along and giving them a chance and giving us a first hand account of what happens at a positive-only dog training club these days.
