TWO BROTHERS As told by George Leverett, Jr. “I’m going to be in the store for a few minutes...and, no, you can’t come in.” George, Jr. turned around and looked at M.J. in the back seat. M.J. replied, “Dad, I’ll behave but I can’t speak for Junior.” The Old Man just looked at him and walked on into the store. As soon as he was out of sight M.J. thumped Junior on the ear. “You do that again and I’m going to thump you back, Old Man or not. Don’t do that again. And.... I’m not going to thump you on the ear. I’ll black both of your eyes.” As soon as he turned back around M.J. thumped him again. George, Jr. was over the seat back in a flash and started pounding on his younger brother with his fists. M.J. was screaming bloody murder and trying to fight back. Suddenly a long arm came through the back window and grabbed George, Jr. by the collar and pulled him off of his brother and out the window. The arm was covered with a dark blue cloth. The arm was attached to a police officer. George had started to fight back but when he saw the uniform he stopped. Next thing he knew he had hand cuffs around both wrists. His only thought was that M.J. had started it, he had fallen for it, and now he was in big trouble. However, the long blue clad arm reached back into the backseat of the car and came out dragging a screaming M.J. Handcuffs immediately went around both of his wrists. After forcing both boys to sit on the curb he asked, “Where are your parents?” Both boys hated to answer as they knew what the Old Man would do when he saw them. If they didn’t answer would he take them to jail? Boy, the Old Man would be really angry if he had to come get them out of jail. George responded first, “Sir, Dad’s in the store. He should be back in a minute.” “Well, boys, I believe I’ll just stand here and wait for him. I don’t remember seeing you two in the jail before so maybe we can reach an agreement.” George breathed a sigh of relief as did M.J. However, both boys knew they were in a hopeless situation. No matter what happened life as they knew it had just ended. Later they walked into the house with the Old Man following. He was obviously not happy. He explained to Thelma what happened then turned to the two boys. “Junior, that cop says that M.J. started it. He saw him thump you twice. It’s good that you didn’t hit him the first time. However, we need to give you a little lesson in anger control. I think you need to get in touch with a softer, gentler side of your nature, Sunshine. I’m not going to whip you this time. However, for the next two weeks your sister, Betty, gets a vacation from cleaning the table and doing the dishes. That’s going to be your job.” “Oh, Dad, you can’t make me do that! I’ll feel like a sissy!” “Three weeks. Want to go for four?” There was no response from George this time. “M.J., you’re going to have the clean the stool in the outhouse for the next month and twice a day. Now into the bedroom.” The Old Man followed his younger son into the bedroom taking off his belt as he did so. MARGARET AND GEORGE, By Tal Leverett, Copyright 2014
