The album releases that have crossed Ethiopian borders are mainly recordings from the 50s to the 80s, however, the contemporary music scene from Addis remains, bar a few exceptions, unknown to the rest of the world. The documentary film New Voices In An Old Flower attempts to display this flourishing scene to the ears and eyes of the world. If you go out around music bars and venues in Addis Ababa, you will enjoy a very characteristic scene, but if you want to get an idea of the different sounds from the country, you will get a very narrow view of it; in some places some Amhara or Gurage music may be found but ... what about the rest? There are more than eighty different nationalities and cultures spread all along the mountains, deserts and forests of Ethiopia. You would barely find any of these music folklore represented in a public space. When we started going out from Addis to work with the musicians, we realized that many of the traditional instruments have been replaced for electronic keyboards, and many local traditional bands have been reduced to a front(wo)man singing along to a keyboard which plays beats and melodies all in one ... A similar process is taking place with studio recordings, bringing down the richness and variety of the sounds and textures of Ethiopian music. We are making conscious efforts in finding and working together with those musicians who keep their identities and look beyond. Far from the idea of being against the changes that naturally occur with time, we are trying to preserve a culture which is endangered; Out From Addis is an attempt to rescue all these music styles and show them, within Ethiopia and beyond.
