“TWO SHOTS AND A SPLASH” The threat of this slated - TopicsExpress

“TWO SHOTS AND A SPLASH” The threat of this slated performance reminds me of one of my worse moments... About 30 years ago I was working as a waiter at the Chestnut Tavern Restaurant in Union, NJ when I took a dinner order at a large table. My customers were unsure as to what kind of cocktails they wanted so I made a boorish suggestion and repeated a sick “bar joke” told to the staff by our service bartender: “How about a Klinghoffer?” What’s that they asked? So I ignorantly replied in jest, “Two shots and a splash.” As they got up to leave in anger and disgust, I learned that some of them were the immediate family members of our local Klinghoffer family. Never was I so ashamed of myself. So I profusely apologized for my stupidity and tried to make amends as they remained there for dinner. As I explained, the murder of their innocent loved one just a little more than a year before had affected me deeply so, thankfully, they accepted that my apology and contrition was sincere. Leon Klinghoffer was a disabled American appliance manufacturer who was murdered in Syria (by shooting him in the forehead and chest as he sat in his wheelchair) and thrown overboard by four PLO terrorists at the command of Yasser Arafat. In 1985 they hijacked the cruise ship Achille Lauro in Egypt in upon which he was celebrating his 36th wedding anniversary with his wife Marilyn. Leon Klinghoffer was the same age as my late mother, 69. He was buried at nearby Beth David Memorial Park in Kenilworth, NJ and his two daughters and their families had just come from his grave site where their mother was also recently buried. Needless to say, I will make every effort to prevent this debacle from being staged at the Met. I hope that you will also. nydailynews/entertainment/theater-arts/protesters-slam-metropolitan-opera-death-klinghoffer-article-1.1949185
