TZM/OSE Update : Rainwater Harvesting ; Why ? Water, the first basic element needed for self-sufficiency. Fortunately the UK has a high annual rainfall, therefore water is an abundant local resource, however most local members currently pay for access to water. Those paying for water do so either by paying a set rate or by water meter (paying by usage). Rainwater harvesting will reduce water costs for those paying by meter. Harvesting is also a useful skill for all members to learn. Water Quality - Simple rain harvesting does not produce water of drinking quality, filtration and disinfection is required in most cases. Contaminants can be picked up during fall, transit and storage. OSE will provide filtration/disinfection methods during next phase, however rain harvesting can immediately produce savings on water used for outdoor purposes - watering plants, washing car etc. For those with high outdoor use harvesting rainwater and switching immediately to a meter may be cost-effective. Project goals - Research various rain harvesting methods/systems. Prototyping of existing systems with an emphasis in cost reduction. Design and develop new methods/systems for harvesting/storage. Sourcing of local materials and tools. Provision of training instructions and distribution strategy.
