Tafsir Surah At-Tin In this Surah, Allah swears by tremendous, blessed localities in which much good and blessing has appeared because Prophets lived there. Thus, the fig and the olive are a reference to the place where they grow in the Blessed and Holy Land, Palestine. It is the place to which Ibrahim AS migrated, the place where ‘Isa AS was born, and the place to which the Prophet Muhammad (P) journeyed by night. He swears by Tur Sinin, the mountain from which Allah spoke to Musa, and it is Mount Sinai. Allah has sworn by these places because it was in these places the revelation was sent down. Allah swears that He has created man upon the Fitrah of the religion and in the best form possible in which man could have been created, and is there anything greater than the Fitrah of religious inclination? As for his deterioration to the worst state, until he is the lowest of the low, it is for his soul to change from belief to disbelief. However, this is not a condition that strikes the believer who does righteous deeds; for such people, they will have a reward and recompense which is endless. It is from Allah’s Mercy that He keeps the believers firm in their faith. However, as for the disbelievers, He forsakes them and so they deteriorate and are destroyed. This address is intended as a chiding and a reproach for the man who disbelieves. This question is a question of objection, meaning: what is that which drives you to deny the Recompense and to disbelieve the Messengers who gave tidings of the Recompense (that is to come?) Furthermore, every denier of the truth rejects the Recompense, and what is intended is rejection of the religion in its entirety: its beliefs and its injunctions which include belief in the Day of Recompense. Is not Allah Who has done all that has been mentioned in these ayahs the Most Just of Judges? Meaning: the most precise of them in His Work, the wisest of them and the most just of them in His Judgement. Thus, these ayahs contain one rebuke of the disbelievers after another, and one affirmation after another. In conclusion, the only one who would reject the Recompense is a person who foolishly debases his own soul, not realizing its true worth, and is ignorant concerning his Lord. As for the believers, He has the faith that Allah swt is the Best of Judges. Lessons and Reflections 1. This Surah contains an oath by places in which revelation was sent down. The purpose is the honor those places, and they are: Palestine, Mount Sinai, and Makkah. 2. The Fitrah of the religion is the best form in which man has been created. 3. The believer is careful to preserve his natural Fitrah while the disbeliever corrupts it. 4. Allah swt is the Most Just of Judges.
