Tate elected today to undergo surgery to remove the scars from her - TopicsExpress

Tate elected today to undergo surgery to remove the scars from her cancer surgery. It has been two years since she had her thyroid and 38 lymph nodes removed at Childrens Hospital in Denver. Eleven of those nodes had cancer. After two bouts of radioactive iodine and lots of waiting, Tates cancer marker continues to (slowly) move in the right direction. The strange thing about thyroid cancer is that it is highly treatable, Praise the Lord, but a very slow process over years of treatment; essentially the opposite of chemo, but so much easier. While some of Tates scars from her May, 2012 surgery healed nicely, there were a few areas that did not. She has a scar about 15-16 long from underneath her left ear, down her neck, and across the front of her throat. The scar on the side of her neck continued to look red, angry and raised up, and she had a drain site scar that was a huge, ugly bump on the front of her chest below her neck. Many times she was told by kids the drain site looked like a pimple - Why dont you pop that? Its gross? I was frankly not thrilled about her decision to have an elective surgery, but at almost 12 years old, I feel that honoring her choice is really important. While Tate is very easy going, she is also really good about putting forth what she needs through this long journey! Were so praised and lucky every day that Tate continues to trend in the right direction. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers. Craig, Lorie, Tate and Jack
