[Ted Cruz] is a laughingstock to everybody but him. -Senator - TopicsExpress

[Ted Cruz] is a laughingstock to everybody but him. -Senator Harry Reid, NV (D) With all due respect, Senator Reid, I could not disagree more. For one who claims to lament the demise of civility among senators (and all elected officials), you do nothing to resuscitate a formal, old-world American gentility between those who disagree. But let us leave that aside for a moment. Whether or not you agree with him on the issues, Senator Reid, you cannot say that Senator Cruz did not stand up for what he believed in -or what a great many Americans believe in. He did not call names, he did not hurl personal insults, he did not engage in ad hominem attacks on his fellow Senators. He conducted himself with honor and dignity in pursuit of a higher principle, focusing on issues rather than persons. It doesnt matter that he is a newcomer to the Senate. Newness does not negate or relegate ones right to speak out or take action. It doesnt matter how many people stood behind him or opposed him. Moral rightness is not dictated by the numbers behind the cause. It doesnt matter that even some Republicans rejected Cruzs stand. Pure party politics have no place when it comes to issues of such gravity -or any issue at all. Senator Cruz is a laughingstock only to those who would rather not engage him solely on the issues at hand. More attention might be paid to the crushing national debt, and Obamacare and all its implications. As an elected official myself, I never forget that I am beholden to the citizens whom I humbly serve. And it is the issues that concern them above all else. Humility is a virtue. So is civility -especially when disagreements arise. I must say that your comments about Senator Cruz, with whom you clearly disagree, are incredibly disheartening and uncalled for. Though you serve in the United States Senate, and I merely on a local city council, whatever words we say and actions we take ultimately reflect on one another, on government at large, and on the United States as a whole. What is especially disheartening is that your dismissal of Senator Cruz as a laughingstock comes following your apology on the floor of the Senate for engaging in personal attacks, and your lamenting of the demise of civility. We are servants, and so we must remain humble and civil with one another. Because at the end of the day, it is not ourselves that we serve, but God and the American people. As elected servants, there can be no greater trust or duty that we have, but to serve humbly and civilly. I sincerely pray and press for a return to such elected service that will maintain and raise our place as the greatest nation in the history of this world.
