Tedi - Ill understand if you take this down but that last post about the term bellydance got me thinking...why IS it that folks get upset about including tribal/fusion under the bellydance umbrella? theres a clear distinction to me between bellydance (a term that Westerners came up with) and raqs sharqi. I mean, isnt that a form of appropriation...instead of calling it by something natives use, why use a western term? so with tribal/fusion and american cabaret being something with both western and raqs sharqi roots, it only makes sense to me that we call that bellydance but distinctly call raqs sharqi...raqs sharqi. why does that idea invoke such strong emotions? also...and Ive heard arguments against this that I dont find very convincing...but tribal/fusion shares a lot of the same movement vocab as raqs sharqi...with different stylizations of course...but still...undulations, hip drops, shimmies, circles and figure 8s. its not like theres only 1 move that overlaps, but several. why is the idea of tribal/fusion also being bellydance so offensive?
