Thanking God for another day! Today is: Earth Hour: a worldwide grassroots movement uniting people to protect the planet, and is organised by WWF. Engaging a massive mainstream community on a broad range of environmental issues, Earth Hour was famously started as a lights-off event in Sydney, Australia in 2007. Since then it has grown to engage more than 7000 cities and towns worldwide, and the one-hour event continues to remain the key driver of the now larger movement. At 8:30 pm, millions of people across the world are switching off lights for one hour - to celebrate their commitment to the planet. Knights of Columbus Founders Day: in 1882, the Connecticut state legislature officially chartered the Knights of Columbus, a fraternal benefit society founded by Father Michael J. McGivney with a group of parishioners in the basement of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven. Still true to its founding principles of charity, unity, and fraternity 125 years later, the Knights of Columbus has grown to the largest lay Catholic organization in the world with more than 1.7 million members. National Mom & Pop Business Owners Day: These individuals spend countless hours nurturing and growing their young enterprises. The workload demands, and lack of a hired staff, often translates into long and late hours, and many missed family and personal events. But, all in all, they love what they do. After all, they are their own boss. New businesses have always been a vital, yet not fully appreciated, part of the U.S. economy. On they retail side, they bring different and unique products to the marketplace. They provide stellar and personal service support. When you call, you are more likely to get a real, live person. And unlike big national chains, they know their products. They are outstanding performers in niche markets. In manufacturing, they create many new concepts and ideas, making them creators of new products. Niagara Falls Runs Dry Day: in 1848, ice blockages caused rivers to run dry, and reduced the flow of water to such an extent that Niagara Falls’ 3,160 tons of water per second flow came to a halt. Locals celebrate with Niagara Falls Runs Dry Day, and with plenty of great hotels in the area, it’s not hard to come celebrate with them! Vietnam Veterans Day: Founded by a Vietnam Vet and recently endorsed by both Houses of Congress and the President, it is a way for a now-grateful nation to make up for the miserable and disrespectful homecomings that our troops received back in the day. While theres a little confusion on the actual date, those who recognize the day do so either on March 29 or 30 in memory of the final troop withdrawal. Lemon Chiffon Cake Day: a lemony, airy, refreshing, and moist treat. Harry Baker, an insurance agent from Los Angeles, is credited for inventing the first chiffon cake in 1927. This light and airy cake uses vegetable oil rather than shortening, and was a big hit with everyone who tasted it. Baker guarded his secret recipe, however, only making it for Hollywood stars and the famous Brown Derby Restaurant. So....spend an hour in the dark tonight, Happy Founders Day KOC! Shop local today!
