Thanks to Vira Avalokita Buddhism was not Buddhism until the Christians named it so, for it was a Science based on theories of Observation, hypothesis, experimentation and replication under controlled conditions. However, due to fact that most persons of the past were not educated some superstations did prevail due to their past ignorant religious experiences. Buddhism did not destroy these cultural religious trappings but it did not foster them either but taught logical and reasonable inquiry so person could free themselves from the folly of theism. This is clearly taught in the Dharma, not only from Gautama time but also by many great teachers such as Saint Kobō Daishi of Koyasan. The Dharma was view as a process of education to liberation and not as a means to learn about the gods. The belief in the gods was and still is considered a block to full realization in Dharma Teaching and the non-soul theory of Gautama which still prevails in all schools of Buddhism today.
