The 25 Days Of Great Singers Day 2: Van Morrison. In some ways he is all old R&B and Soul and in some ways he is an entity all unto himself. Listening to a track like Brown Eyed Girl or Domino and you cant help but get pumped and sing along. But you cant match that sound - no one can. He channels his inner Marvin Gaye and Al Green with songs like Crazy Love showing that despite his brilliance he never stopped appreciating others. John Lee Hooker called him my favorite white blues singer. Bono said he had to stop listening to Van before making The Unforgettable Fire because I didnt want his very original soul voice to overpower my own. And its not hard to see why. When he brings it down for something like And It Stoned Me or Madame George it can be almost heart breaking. ...and the love that loves the love that loves the love that loves... The man could almost be surreal and abstract. He always leaves you guessing what hell sing next and feeling like you just witnessed true art at its finest. His entire record Astral Weeks is a jazz-induced poetry slam. It didnt do very well when it came out, but its on most lists of greatest albums of all time. Along with this one...
