The Bibb County Board of Education met last night for our - TopicsExpress

The Bibb County Board of Education met last night for our regularly scheduled board meeting. Let me start off with the good news and accolades, since we so often want to talk about the bad, and rarely seem to focus on the good: Bibb County had five schools that were named Title I reward schools. These schools rank in the top 5 to 10% of all Title I schools as it relates to performance: Alex II Elementary School, Barden Elementary School, Burdell – Hunt Elementary School, Union Elementary School, and Appling Middle School. We received word that Bruce and Williams Elementary Schools are no longer considered Alert schools. Central High School is no longer a priority school. Schools coming off of lists such as these are considered to be improving performance, and not under any further watchdog status. These are wonderful accomplishments by the teachers and administrators and students at the schools, to prove that performance is improving. A big shout out to a National Merit Scholarship Commended Scholar: Anna Jones, of Howard High School. And congratulations to Ofc. John K. Wilson of the campus police department. He received the award for Georgia Police Officer Association Valor Award. In last nights meeting, we approved the salary schedule for many of our workers in the schools. This includes custodians, bus drivers, paraprofessionals, administrative assistants, and others. The point of approving the schedule was to bring our pay scale more in line with other systems of similar size. Our staff had salaries frozen quite sometime ago, and a salary study with payscales was long overdue. The vote to approve the salary schedule passed seven to one, with the loan nay vote being board member Tom Hudson. The other major piece of business at last nights meeting was an announcement about our superintendent search. We are conducting interviews of some candidates on October 25, and again on October 29. We ask that everyone respect this process, as we conduct these interviews confidentially. We hope to introduce finalists to the general public for the final vetting process of the candidates, sometime in November. In a perfect world, we will have a new superintendent in place by December 1. I do not know if that is possible or not at this point, but it is my very realistic goal. As always, if anyone has any questions or concerns, feel free to email me directly. It continues to be an honor and a privilege to serve you as a Bibb County Board of Education Member.
