The British Virgin Islands Reading Council is dedicated to fostering the love of reading and developing lifelong readers and has pledged to work to promote literacy locally and internationally through service to local council members; partnership with local community, partnership with the international reading association and partnership with the international community. Mrs. H. Lynden Smith founded the BVI Reading Council (BVIRC) in 1995. In 1997 it became a chartered member of the International Reading Association and now it is an affiliate of that association. The Council has a close relationship with the Ministry and Department of Education and Culture. The theme of the Council is Literacy our goal for all. The goals of the Council includes: � to encourage the study of reading problem at all educational level; � to study the various factors that influence reading progress; � to identify and solve problems at all levels; � to sponsor and run seminars, workshops, and conferences for teachers and parents; � to assist in the development of adequate teacher training programmes especially with regards to the teaching of reading; � to promote mutual understanding, cooperation, and cooperative work among educators at all levels, parents and persons in leadership position We hope that you, the community, would give us your generous support.
