The Cherokee County [GA] Historical Society is trying to work with the Board of Education not to demolish two important landmarks in downtown Canton for their new administration building. The Cherokee County Historical Society supports the School Board’s plan to build downtown. However, they feel that the loss of two important landmarks, one at a prominent entry point, would be detrimental to the efforts of those working to revitalize downtown. Both the Canton Grammar School (below) and the former Canton Cotton Mill office are listed on the National Register of Historic Places as part of Canton’s historic district. It is the Historical Society’s hope that the School Board will integrate one of these buildings into their new campus. From the tour the CCHS was given, it is obvious that Building A, the former Canton Cotton Mill building, is in better condition. However, there are generations of people who attended the Grammar School and support its preservation. Over the years CCHS has had tremendous support to save these landmarks from their 900 members, through petitions and their Sites Worth Saving website. They welcome the opportunity to work with the School Board to find a solution that meets its needs while maintaining Canton’s historic character.
