The City of Lethbridge is looking at its curbside recycling options. As Terry Vogt explains a pilot project could start by the spring: Lethbridge is taking a serious look at offering curbside recycling, with a proposal to have start a pilot project next year. City Councillors will get a closer look at the proposal later this month, during the Finance Committees formal debate on the four-year operating budget. The city currently provides recycling depots, where people can drop off and recycle their cardboard, paper, plastic and tin cans. Surveys show 80-percent of lethbridge residents want the city to provide curbside recycling, and more than 60-percent agree theyd be willing to pay an extra eight to ten dollars on their monthly utility bill. The Waste and Recycling Department told council it could launch a pilot project next year. Councillor Blaine Hyggen says its something council needs to examine. Were trying to present different options, options that would best benefit citizens of Lethbridge. Curbside recycling is already being offered by several private companies. Austin Sedgwick is with Residential Recycle. He says theyre trying to get as many customers as they can before the city starts cutting into business. Itll be tough if the city does it, but were trying to stick around as long as we can. Council has been told that If Lethbridge does proceed with a pilot project next year, it could be another year or longer before the city would be in a position to fully impliment a curbside recycling program. City officials say theyre also looking at ways to increase recycling among industrial, commercial and institutional users. They say those groups generate about 75 percent of the material currently going into the Lethbridge landfill.
