The DiMartino-Osland Jazz Orchestra (DOJO) brings its big band sound back to the Grand Theatre Friday evening at 7:30. Tickets remain in all price ranges. Co-directors Vince DiMartino and Miles Osland, nationally known and respected musicians, lead a 17-member band comprised of the area’s top university music professors and professional musicians. Frankfort local Rick Cook plays trumpet. A graduate of the Eastman School of Music and native of Long Island, NY, Vince DiMartino is one of America’s leading trumpet performers and teachers. He served as Professor of Trumpet at UK for 20 years before moving on to Centre College as Matton Professor of Music, where he retired in 2012. DiMartino is one of the most sought after trumpet performers, although he is equally known as a jazz artist. He has been the lead and solo trumpet in the Lionel Hampton Band, the Chuck Mangione Band and the Clark Terry Band. He has also performed with some of the country’s finest college jazz ensembles. DiMartino was the recipient of the Governor’s Lifetime Achievement Award in the Arts in 2008. Reached recently for an interview, DiMartino was conducting a master class at Illinois State University. The previous week saw him at East Carolina University. His greatest pleasures are seeing progress in his students and the concerts and club dates with DOJO. Many of its members, in addition to being great musicians, are lifetime friends. DOJO’s latest CD “Quotient,” released in 2009, has garnered high praise for its big band orchestrations and top-notch solos. Time-honored favorites such as “I’ve Got a Crush on You” and “My Funny Valentine” join more obscure selections, all displaying superior musicianship and inventive arrangements. Miles Osland is Director of Jazz Studies and Professor of Saxophone at UK. He is also a graduate of the Eastman School of Music. Osland began his 43-year musical career as a ten-year-old playing flute in a local San Diego establishment with some of his teachers. In addition to teaching and performing, Osland is an accomplished arranger and composer and author of several books and articles on saxophone technique and improvisation. The Osland Saxophone Quartet’s 2-CD recording titled “Commission Impossible” has been featured on NPR’s Performance Today. In addition, nine of Osland’s recordings have been submitted for Grammy nominations. Osland promises Friday night’s performance will have something for all age groups, with great musicians playing some stock arrangements of standards as well as more contemporary big band arrangements.
