The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) - TopicsExpress

The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) is one of a total 53 conventions introduced by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), and is regarded as one of the most important. The sinking of the Titanic on 14 April 1912 after colliding with an iceberg was the catalyst for the adoption of the first International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) in 1914. The current version came into force in 1974 with minor amendments since then. The main objective of the SOLAS Convention is to specify minimum standards for the construction, equipment and operation of ships to ensure safety for passengers and crew. The SOLAS Convention is also important for AMSA’s search and rescue responsibilities. SOLAS specifies ships to assist others in distress if able to do so. Upon a distress situation at sea, AMSA may issue a broadcast to nearby ships to request their assistance.
