The Lien Environmental Fellowship for Academics and Researchers in Central, Southeast & South Asia The Nanyang Environment & Water Research Institute Community Development (NEWRIComm) invites academics & researchers in universities, research organizations and government organizations in Central Asia, Southeast Asia and South Asia to apply for the Lien Environmental Fellowship (LEF) Program. The fellowship program supports solutions that have potential to reach far and offer long-term benefits to the community and ecosystem. The LEF program is supported by the Lien Foundation and the Nanyang Technological University (NTU). It places strong emphasis on implementation of technologies, coupled with well-grounded research and community capacity building. The ideal outcome would see implementation follow education so that benefits can accrue beyond the Fellowship recipients and towards the target communities. Phases: 1. 6-month Fellowship 2. 12-month Implementation 3. 12-month Monitoring Fellowship The selected fellows will receive residential fellowship at NEWRI from NEWRI mentors. They will attend seminars, participate in site visits, conduct laboratory and field research, participate on discussions regarding prototyping issues and detailing of implementation plans. The fellows will receive up to two return airfair from recipient’s country to Singapore; monthly allowance of S$2,500; accommodation; and laboratory and prototyping costs. Fellows will present the key outcomes of this phase. Projects deemed to merit further support will be offered Implementation award. Implementation In this phase a pilot implementation of technology and community training is done. The fellow is provided consultancy on technical & project execution; cost of material and construction of pilot implementation; project logistic costs such as transport, field work expenses of the project team; and monthly allowance of SGD500 to the LEF fellow. Fellow organization must submit quarterly progress report to NEWRIComm during these 12 months. Monitoring During the monitoring phase that immediately begins after the completion of implementation phase, fellows will be provided project logistic costs up to two observation visits (transport, field work expenses for monitoring team). The fellow should submit a sustainability report at the end of this phase. This report will elaborate how the implementation outcomes will have been operated and maintained by the benefiting community, and how they will have benefited the community & ecosystem thus far. Eligibility Criteria: -Applicants can be academics and researchers from universities and research interests in Central Asia, South East Asia and South Asia. -Applicants must possess a PhD degree. Applicants with Masters’ degree and substantial relevant work experience will be considered. -Applicants should coordinate the project during the fellowship phase, implementation phase and monitoring phase spanning over 3 years. -Fellowship is awarded to institution, not individuals. So, applicants must obtain support of their institutions prior to applying for the program. -Applicants’ institutions, partner organizations, and community should be ready to provide in-kind support to the applicant. -Proposals must demonstrate capacity for research excellence, novel concept, data quality, implementation feasibility, and sustainable development. Application Process: 1. Submit a project brief by the deadline using the provided template. 2. Shortlisted applicants would be notified via e-mail within three weeks after the submission deadline. 3. These shortlisted applicants will have to submit full proposal by 31 March 2015. 4. Successful applicants shall be notified by 1 May 2015.A letter of award and terms of reference shall be sent, requiring formal acceptance by the applicant and her/his institution.
