The Meat Industry of India unplugged. -> Meat production is estimated at 4.9 million tones, standing eighth in rank in the world’s meat production. Buffalo in India contributes about 30% of total meat production. The contribution by cattle, sheep, goats and poultry is 30%, 5%, 10%, 10.2% and 11.5%, respectively. -> India accounts for estimated 20% of total meat exports around the world. According to the US Department of Agriculture, India became the largest exporter of beef edging out Australia and New Zealand in May 2012. -> Uttar Pradesh is the top buffalo meat-producing state with 3 lakh tonnes in 2011. At least 70% of the buffalo meat is exported. Our meat is lean and cheaper. We supply halal meat, which is preferred in Gulf countries, said Surendra Kumar Ranjan, director of Uttar Pradesh-based Hind Agro Industries. -> While Kerala is the biggest consumer for cattle meat in the country. ->Gujarat produced 22,000 tonnes of meat in 2010-11 against 10,600 tonnes of meat in 2001-02. With 39 abattoirs, which slaughters over 1,000 animals a day, Gujarat is amongst the top 10 States in India in terms of the number of slaughterhouses. -> Cow slaughter is legal in Kerala, West Bengal and some north east states(excluding Assam). _______________________ It will be interesting to see how does the new govt come to grip with the Pink Revolution.
