The Men and Boys’ Choir will sing a Choral Eucharist at 10:00 am on October 26th, the Twentieth after Pentecost. Readings at the Choral Eucharist will be Deuteronomy 34: 1-12, 1 Thessalonians 1-8 and Matthew 22: 34-46 and the principal service music will be: Psalm: Psalm 90: 1-6, 13-17 (Ivor Atkins, 1869-1953) Mass Setting: Communion Service in A minor (Harold Darke, 1888-1976) The Lord’s Prayer (Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov, 1844-1908) Anthems: O Taste and See and O How Amiable (Ralph Vaughan Williams, 1872-1958) Hymns and tunes are: The God of Abraham Praise (Leoni) Where Charity and Love Prevail (Twenty-Fourth (Primrose)) Come Down, O Love Divine (Down Ampney) Guide Me, O Thou Great Jehovah (Cwm Rhondda) “O taste and see” was composed for the Coronation of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II in 1953 and is based on Psalm 34: 8. The anthem “O how amiable” was originally written for the Abinger Pageant in 1934 in a version accompanied by military band. The version that will be sung is intended for use as an anthem for the dedication of a church or other festivals. The text is based on excerpts from Psalms 84 and 90 and concludes with the opening verse of the hymn “O God our Help in Ages Past”. The choice of anthems reflects a connection to the appointed psalm and the fact that both anthems were composed by Ralph Vaughan Williams. He also collected and arranged the tune Down Ampney.
