The “One Thing” In a once popular movie, one actor said to another, “Do you know what the secret of life is? . . . One thing, just one thing. You stick to that and everything else don’t mean (dung).” I substituted a Biblical KJV word for the slang, lest any be offended. Paul wrote a similar thought to the Philippians (3:8). The movie writers suggest that the “One Thing” is to be figured out. I submit that the “One Thing” is in the person and message of Jesus Christ. Paul wrote to the Galatians, “For all the law is fulfilled in one word (or “One Thing”), even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.” (Gal 5:14) Christ fulfilled the Law rendering it null and void, but has given us a new law on which we are to base our lives. Jesus said, “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” Yes the “One Thing” is love, not a warm and fuzzy feeling, butterflies in the stomach, or even physical arousal. Love is a choice, to choose this woman over all the rest, this man over all the rest, these people over those others, or this Lord over all other lords. When you choose to serve Jesus over all others, that is loving Jesus. “No man can serve (or choose) two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” (Matthew 8:24) When you choose to devote yourself to one person over all others, including yourself, that is love. (Romans 12:10) When you deny your own welfare for the welfare of others’, that is love. (Matthew 16:24; Romans 14:19; 1 Corinthians 10:24,33; Philippians 2:2-4) In the name of the Lord whom we have chosen to serve, we have chosen to serve the welfare of others over our own. This is that “One Thing” on which the servants of Jesus Christ are to base their lives. The “Secret of Life” is no secret, it’s found in God’s Word.
