The RCMP opinion raises a lot of questions. First, ignore the headline as it drops the word solely, making it sound like mental illness had nothing to do with the shooting, and thats not what Paulson said. Second, do lucidity and premeditation, and preparedness constitute proof that schizophrenia and addiction arent primarily to blame for this attack? Third, does this mean we should have attached blame for Mark David Chapmans assassination of Lennon to Catcher in the Rye (he himself did)? Or should we have attached blame to Jodie Foster for Hinckleys insanity? American Psycho for Bernardos (some would)? The point is: does this act represent an actual threat to our security, or was it an isolated horrible act of terror by a crazy addict? I think the latter and though I cant prove it, but the RCMP hasnt convinced me otherwise. A tragedy, disgusting, shocking, impossible to believe, unnerving, nightmarish: yes. Our official response to it: hysteria. Maybe. I could be wrong.
