The REAL Day of Infamy is today, December 4. On this day in 1941 a report of the Japanese message to their fleet to attack was relayed to Washington DC, but never sent to Admiral Kimmel or General Short...intentionally. We knew well in advance that the Japanese were going to attack. It was a lie that we didnt have direct radio communication with Washington DC. - Lt. Col. Clifford M. Andrew. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was instigated by the U.S., Britain and Holland, when they cut off all shipping into and out of Japan, threatening its people with starvation. Gerald Mason Van Dyke, was an Army Intelligence officer in Hawaii at the time of the attack. He knew Pearl Harbor would be attacked and sent his warning to Washington DC at 2:00 p.m. on December 4, 1941. His message was received in Washington at about 7:00 p.m. (due to the time difference) by Rear Admiral Paulus Prince Powell who then notified Secretary of the Navy Frank Knox who then contacted Secretary of War Henry Stimson. He contacted President Roosevelt, who relayed the message to Naval Intelligence. Knox wanted to move the Navy out of Pearl Harbor and set up a defense perimeter around the islands. Forrestal also wanted to act defensively. President Roosevelt put Powell, Knox and Forrestal under armed Marine guard until after the Pearl Harbor attack. He sent a message to Lt. Col. Clifford M. Andrew, Intelligence officer at Army Intelligence in Hawaii, which read: The Japanese will attack, do not prepare defenses, we need the full support of the American Nation in a war time effort by an unprovoked attack upon the Nation. Today, the remains of that radio station can still be seen, ignored by the tourists who have come to see the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument at Pearl Harbor.
