The Richter Archive of art illustrations was announced as a new acquisition by the Gallery on this day in 1943. The archive was created by George M. Richter, a collector and authority on Renaissance art. The acquisition was timely because of growing concern for art and architecture lost as a result of World War II. A gift from Solomon R. Guggenheim of New York, the archive includes more than 60,000 reproductions of paintings from all schools of art and became the nucleus of the Gallerys Photographic Archives. 1.usa.gov/1r6BIkP [sourcing image from photo collections]
