The Rochester T’ai Chi Ch’uan Center and The Rochester Chen Taijiquan Association Present Traditional Sun TaiJiQuan and Ba Gua Zhang with Tim Cartmell Sat. & Sun. November 9-10, 2013 Rochester NY Why attend this workshop? Whether you are an experienced Taiji player or just a beginner, there are distinct advantages to learning Sun Taijiquan, and all will benefit from Tim’s extensive practical skill, and knowledge of both form and technique. For the beginner, or intermediate student, those previously mentioned martial aspects combined with the health benefits provide a complete art. The “live step”, follow step footwork helps a student’s other Taiji studies by establishing a “whole body rhythm that is the signature of all Tai Ji Quan styles.” The “stepping method…. Is also much safer and less stressful on the joints of the hip and leg”….and “exercises the legs without causing undue fatigue.” “The upright and natural stance improves balance”…. And the addition of the…”steps from the Ba Gua Zhang arts has the potential to greatly improve the flexibility of the hips….” Its gentle postures and high stances make it very suitable for all ages and skill levels. For the more experienced (and those who want more experience), Sun’s form is unique in that it is “practiced exactly as it is to be applied in a fight.” “Sun’s Tai Ji Quan emphasizes the importance of skill, sensitivity, and technique over development of exceptional strength or speed.” “With the addition of the strategies and techniques of Xing Yi Quan and Ba Gua Zhang, the technique base is larger than most other styles of Tai Ji Quan.” “Sun’s form is all-inclusive…power training, technical training, and the strategy of application are all combined in one coherent form.”quotes from Tim Cartmell) Sun BaGua Zhang was created by Sun Lu Tang on the basis of what he learned with Master Cheng Ting Hua(Cheng style), student of Ba Gua founder Dong Hai Chuan. It is composed of ten Zhang(Zhang means palm), consisting only of a few simple movements. “Sun style Bagua consists of 10 circular forms which are practiced on both sides of your body while walking in a circle.” Avoiding complicated movements and long transitions, in Sun Ba Gua Zhang, it is initially the back foot which pushes (weight of the body on the heels), then the front foot gradually lowers to the ground (heel first, then toes), with the front foot drawing the back foot off the ground. On Sunday, Tim will teach Sun Style Taijiquan at The Rochester Tai Chi Chuan Center, 80 Rockwood Pl. Rochester NY 14610 rtccc Tim will teach the traditional Sun Taiji form with detailed explanation of the internal aspects, with some martial application. Sun style Taijiquan is one of the five major schools of Taiji that are most widely practised around the world today. Sun Style Taijiquan is an internal martial art discipline that combines characteristics from Xingyiquan, Bagua Zhang and Taijiquan. Sun Jian Yun, Sun Lu-Tangs daughter, described the Sun Style Taijiquan method as employing Bagua Zhangs stepping method, Xingyiquans leg and waist methods and Taijiquans body softness. Important features of Sun style include: upright and natural stances, good balance between stability and flexibility, fast movement and (lively step) footwork coming from Bagua and Hsingi, opening and closing hands (qigong), and martial effectiveness. Tim Cartmell studied Sun style Ba Gua Zhang and Tai Ji Quan with Sun Jian Yun (Sun Lu-tang’s daughter [1914-2003] and heir to his style), Sun Bao An (grandson) and Liu Yan Long. Sun style Tai Ji Quan was developed by Sun Lutang (1861-1932), and was considered expert in two other internal martial arts styles: Xingyiquan and Baguazhang. Tim Cartmell is one of the most sought after martial arts instructors in North America.
