The South Wales Autumn Congress in Pencoed turned out to be a - TopicsExpress

The South Wales Autumn Congress in Pencoed turned out to be a triumph for Craig Woolcock (Barry) who won the open section with 5 out of 5. Entering the last round needing only a draw to win the tournament he might have been excised for playing cautiously. However, such tactics can lead to disaster and Craig rightly put his faith in his own ability and played his normal game. He was rewarded with a 100% record. Lee Davis and Nicholas Evans shared second with four points. Nicholas also took the Welsh Under 20 prize (well done), while the Under 1800 grading prize went to Calum Harris of Pontypridd with 3 points. After his fine win Craig joked that he was glad he hadn’t had to play me. It is true that there have been some very strange results in our encounters in the past, but I think he’s pulled well ahead of me in the last couple of years. Congratulations Craig. Picture of him receiving his prize below. I’m afraid I didn’t see much of the minor tournament, but can report it was won by Andrew Worthington of Bridgend. Aron Calist and Martyn Mabor shared second place. Well done to all of them. We are very lucky to have some excellent controllers in South Wales, and, as usual, the event ran smoothly thanks the quality of the control team. Like so many officials in chess and other sports, it’s easy to forget their contribution, but nothing gets done without them. So you will excuse me if I take this opportunity to thank them.
