The Spirit of the Mau Mau * wily and deceitful are they who take our lands and steal our freedom the come upon with violence and take from us our right then call us violent when we fight them for our lands our freedom the oppressor is sly and deceitful he speaks peace whilst holding a gun and retaining our lands be peaceful he says even as he is violent forget he says but he keeps what is ours forgetting that it is ours and not his why must the victims always be the ones forgetting or forgiving nay I say unto you justice must be served let not the oppressor dictate your narrative shape your thoughts nor steal your voice or sense of agency and thus render you helpless when you have the very strength to struggle to overthrow him and take back what is rightfully yours heed not his lies nor platitudes nor false piety as he flatters you in the hope that you will forget and forgive that he has wronged you in your yesterdays in your todays and will do so even in your tomorrows remember power is not inherited it is taken just as yours was taken and you placed in bondage disenfranchised and dehumanized look inside of you without fear or apology in you resides the spirit of the Mau Mau the presence of Lumumba the voice of Sankara indeed you are sons and daughters of the soil children of Africa you have been lied to enough beat the drums and dance by the firelight the spirits of Africa watch silently the ancestors speak in your dreams of freedom of our lands of those who took it by violence and deceit and made themselves lords over us we must not forget who we are who we were before the chains were set upon us and our lands stolen heed ye sons and daughters of Africa bow to no one nor live on bended knees stand in the ranks and be who you are you are children of Africa and so must you always be _______________________________________ rassool jibraeel snyman - (c)2014 The Poetic Commissar
