The Theory of Tridoshas in Ayurveda. In the context of a continuous flux of body and nature, health, according to Ayurvedais a state of dynamic equilibrium of the body elements,They are called Tridoshas and they are Vata(wind),Pitta(Bile) and Kapha(phlegm). Vata is a combination of the two elements of the universe, namely Air and Eather(Akash). Pitta is an amalgam of fire and earth. Kapha is the combination of ether and water. Of the three Vata or wind occupies a prominent position.Food is moved into the stomach and blood circulated through all parts of the body by the power of the prana vayu. The apan vayu is in the region of the anus and acts downwards to expel the faeces, urine, semen and foetuses. The saman vayu located in the region of the naval helps in digestion of food and transforms it into blood, semen and urine. when any of the three doshas becomes excessively agitated or increases dispropertionately in relation to others the healthy balance is lost and disease results. The loss of dynamic balance may be due to the excessive or deficient use or misuse of the objects of senses, action(of body, mind or speech) and time i.e. different seasons. The restoration of the balance of the three doshas which would bring back health depends on the consumption of the environmental matter in the right form, propertion, combination and at the right time. When the Physician has become sure of the nature of the imbalance of the doshas, he prescribes a substance- a drug or a diet- which will correct the disequilibrium.
