The Tyger is William Blakes most famous poem and is the most anthologized poem in the English Language. The Tyger is said to represent the violence in the onset of the Industrial Revolution and the French Revolution which both brought poverty and death to many people. Blake asks us: What does the undeniable existence of evil and violence in the world tell us about the nature of God? The Tyger, with its companion, The Lamb expresses two different reflections of similar ideas from contrasting perspectives; taken together, the two poems give a perspective on religion that includes the good little Lamb with the clear and easy confidence of a childs innocent faith in a benevolent universe. In comparison, The Tyger speaks of gods frightening but beautiful creation and all its complexity. The Tyger lyrics by William Blake (The Songs of Experience) 1794 music by Enya (Athair ar Neamh) The Memory of Trees 1995 Tyger! Tyger ! Burning bright, In the forests of the night, What immortal hand or eye Could frame thy fearful symmetry? In what distant deeps or skies Burnt the fire of thine eyes? On what wings dare he aspire? What the hand dare sieze the fire? And what shoulder, & what art, Could twist the sinews of thy heart? And when thy heart began to beat, What dread hand? & what dread feet? What the hammer? what the chain? In what furnace was thy brain? What the anvil? what dread grasp Dare its deadly terrors clasp? When the stars threw down their spears, And waterd heaven with their tears, Did he smile his work to see? Did he who made the Lamb make thee? Tyger! Tyger! burning bright In the forests of the night, What immortal hand or eye Dare frame thy fearful symmetry? youtu.be/gWcYJzj42BE
