The US Embassy in Dili, in coordination with the US Navy, recently sent 20 members of Timor-Leste National Police’s (PNTL’s) Maritime Police Unit to Charleston, South Carolina for a week long Commercial Vessel Boarding Training Program. Through its ‘Strengthening Police, Sustaining Peace’ program, the Embassy provides equipment and training to PNTLs Maritime Police Unit to strengthen their capacity to manage Timor-Lestes sea borders. Topics of training included both classroom theory as well as hands-on practical exercises – see the pictures for examples! Though many Maritime Officers and Agents from around the world have attended this training, this was the first time an entire class was dedicated to a single country and the first time this course was taught using interpreters.
