The USLLS Frame team now brings to you, an interview of Ms. Ayushi - TopicsExpress

The USLLS Frame team now brings to you, an interview of Ms. Ayushi Kapoor, who graduated from USLLS in 2011. She is currently working with Carrier Air conditioning and Refrigeration Limited as an Assistant Manager- Legal. We thank her for her contribution. Here you go: Q.1) Tell us about your schooling and background. What inspired the law school decision? I passed out in 2006 from The Air Force School, Subroto Park. Back then, I was a Medical Aspirant wanting to crack the MBBS entrance exam only to realise the gruesome rat race and the reality of capabilities/perseverance required for that. My mother insisted me to give the LL.B entrance exam for IPU, just to keep it as an option. And luckily, I cracked it by fluke, and then just took it up as a career option because I wasn’t interested in Science anymore and since then, its been wonderful. P.S.- I haven’t ever given an entrance exam for any National Schools Q.2) Mooting. Unnecessarily glorified or a stepping stone? A very subjective question actually, however, I wouldn’t say its unnecessarily glorified. Mooting definitely gives you a platform of public speaking and arguing which is necessary for breeding good lawyers. More so, it also nurtures drafting skills. However, sometimes its given too much importance. I wouldn’t say that a good mooter WILL make a good lawyer. But mooting is a contributory factor in making a good lawyer. Q.3) Your current work profile at Carrier Air conditioning and Refrigeration limited? I am currently working as an Assistant Manager-Legal with Carrier Airconditioning & Refrigeration Limited. My work profile in this organisation broadly involves: •General corporate i.e. drafting/vetting of agreements/tenders/Pos/Guarantees and various other commercial instruments with legal impact. •Liasioning with external counsels for various litigations-Consumer, Recovery, 138 and labour matters. •Assisting in tax and secretarial matters. Q.4) Why didn’t you opt for litigation? The reason being, the number of years to be given to establish yourself, the need of a godfather etc. Corporate law provides a better springboard. Q.5) Your entire USLLS experience. Any special person(s) you would like to mention? USLLS has been a good experience, I often miss the Kashmere Gate campus. 5 years is too long a time, but batch of 2011 made it worthwhile. I hope back then, we had better infrastructure, faculty and a better placement cell. Q.6) The world beyond the race for “who-wants-to-be-the-next-amarchand-partner”. Your take. In other words, please elaborate on the alternative career choices that a person graduating from a Law School today would have, other than “placements”. I worked for about 8 months in a law firm and then joined as an in-house counsel with Carrier, and the experience has been good. There are various other choices than just joining a law firm such as a Legal Journalist, or maybe an NGO if your heart is in social issues and the fact that you have a background in law gives you better perspective. Even Company Secretary is a good course post law. Q.7) Your interests in the world beyond law I like to dance and travel. Q.8) Considering that the students studying in National law universities and the students studying in USLLS have a different learning environment altogether, any piece of advice for them? One thing that USLLS lacks is “nurturing” lawyers. In USLLS we are a lot more independent on our own and learn by stumbling and falling a lot more than a National Law School graduate. My advise would be, do as much reading as you can. Maybe form Discussion Groups, have the students sit across and share their view points on topics/judgments on weekly basis. Feel free to reach out to your seniors for their guidance.
